Class Act: Fort Pierce School of the Arts

Step into the art room at Fort Pierce Magnet School of the Arts and you step into an art project.

There are, of course , typical art room sights: art supplies, student art projects and a charismatic art teacher.  But it doesn’t take long to spot what makes this art room a little different.

Along one wall is a giant working mural.  Students every day add a little something to it.

Darcy, a student, explained what the mural is all about.

“Every time we have a show here at Fort Pierce Magnet (our art teacher) creates a back-drop and he has all his student work on it,” she said.

Outside the art room, there is still plenty of art to see, like the Scholastic Reading Counts tree.  It’s a growing art project with a meaning.  Each color leaf on the tree represents a different grade level and class.

“Every time we pass a Scholastic Reading Counts test with an 80 or higher, we go get a leaf from our teachers, we write our name on it and then put it on the tree,” explained another student, Gary.

“The person with the most leaves at the end of the year gets a party,” he said.
