10:15 a.m.: Facebook post from the Rev. Scott Alexander of the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Vero Beach on 27th Avenue: ”Our congregation and building here in Vero Beach almost played a role in the 2016 presidential campaign. On Wednesday, three unannounced strangers (young, pleasant, casually dressed) came in the front door, introduced themselves as an advance team from the Clinton campaign, and asked if Hillary Clinton could deliver a national policy address on national service on Friday in our sanctuary. (We are rated for 1,000 persons capacity by the local fire marshal, the biggest hall in the city).

After consulting the calendar, we said yes, and they said they had one more venue (a larger theatre in Democratic-leaning Fort Pierce) to check out before making their final decision. Well, we lost out to the larger venue, where she is delivering the address this morning (although she did stay here in Vero Beach at the best beachfront hotel overnight.) The advance team was very interested in all of our congregation’s social justice commitments (and thought our venue was near perfect) but alas, it was not to be. But it did make for an exciting work here at UUFVB and the Emerson Center.”

10:15 a.m.: There have been no big disturbances or arrests as of about 10:15 a.m., according to Lt. Robert Ridle of the Fort Pierce Police. ”Everything looks like it’s going smoothly,” he said. The amount of traffic has been about what they expected.
