Fort Pierce man charged with burglary after he’s found inside home

A woman called authorities Wednesday morning and told them a fugitive had just left her home, according to arrest affidavits.

Demota Lee Travius Ward, 24,  of the 500 block of North 15th Street in Fort Pierce, was charged with burglary of an occupied dwelling, burglary of an occupied structure and three counts of resisting an officer without violence, records showed.

He remained held at the St. Lucie County Jail Thursday without bond because of two additional charges of violation of probation in connection with earlier cases involving battery and resisting an officer without violence, jail records said.

A St. Lucie County sheriff’s deputy  said he saw Ward climb into a car on Avenue Q, according to affidavits. When the car was pulled over  in the 1500 block of Angle Road, Ward  ran into a wooded lot.

A chase ensued, with Ward spotted at several locations. A homeowner called authorities and said a man had broken into his home in the 3900 block of Avenue M and was lying on the floor.  Deputies got the family out of the home and arrested Ward inside, reports said.
