Leave it to the Fort Pierce Westwood High School boys soccer team’s defense to get the Panthers going Wednesday.

Jose Villalta stopped a penalty kick and Gabriel Guerrier scored the first of his three goals late in the first half as the Panthers topped rival Fort Pierce Central 3-1 at Central.

Guerrier scored on an assist from Gassendy Etienne for a 1-0 halftime lead, then added another goal 10 minutes into the second half.

Villalta made six saves for Fort Pierce Westwood (8-1-2), which continued the best start in the program’s 34-year history.

Coach Rob Recor praised his team’s play on defense, singling out Paulson Luxamar.

Reuben Harrison scored on an assist from Mark Allen for Fort Pierce Central (5-5-3). Daniel Banuelos had five saves and Yordy Palacios had two.

Fort Pierce Westwood plays Friday at Bayside.

Martin County 4, Suncoast 1: Alexis Barba had one goal and one assist as the Tigers won a District 13-4A game at Martin County.

Delroy Anderson, Malcolm Brantley and Juan Villatoro had the other goals for Martin County (5-4-3, 2-3-2 district).

Gabe Robert had two assists. Miguel Aguilar had the other.

Chris Franco made six saves.

Suncoast is 7-2-3.

Martin County hosts John Carroll Catholic at 7 p.m. Tuesday.

Jensen Beach 3, Wellington 3: Kobe Swope had one goal and one assist to help the Falcons tie the Wolverines at Jensen Beach.

Josh Palmer and Dennis Hernandez scored the other goals for Jensen Beach (4-5-3).

Andrew Zeblisky made six saves.

Jensen Beach plays Tuesday at Lincoln Park Academy.

North Broward Prep 3, South Fork 1: Dominique Jadusingh scored on an assist from Emmanuel Andres in the Bulldogs’ loss at South Fork.

Alex Barker made five saves for South Fori (9-2-1), which had a six-game winning streak ended.

North Broward Prep (11-1) won its 11th consecutive game.

Girls soccer

St. Edward’s 8, The Pine School 0: Carter Cooper and Elizabeth Zoltak had three goals and two assists apiece in the Pirates’ win at Hobe Sound.

Ally Ediemueller had two goals and one assist for St. Edward’s (5-4).

Lauren Savage made four saves.

Sophia Martin had nine saves for Pine School.

St. Edward’s hosts Fort Pierce Central at 4 p.m. Tuesday.

Vero Beach 8, Palm Beach Gardens 0: Kate Hassell scored one goal and assisted on three others as the Fighting Indians won at the Citrus Bowl.

Madelaine Rhodes scored two goals while Emma Romans, Devon Stanley, Isabela Alamanza, Kylie Matheny and Cara Westenberger had one goal apeice for Vero Beach (11-3-1).

Lauren Barkett had two assists. Morgan Emmons and Brie D’Elia had an assist apiece, while goalkeepers Mallory Padgett and Lindsey Barkett had two saves apiece.

Vero Beach hosts Heritage on Thursday.

Jupiter 9, St. Lucie West Centennial 1: Emily Farnham scored the goal for the Eagles (1-10-1).

Heather Sceiczina had eight saves.

Centennial plays Tuesday at Jensen Beach.

Suncoast 4, Martin County 0: Alyanah Walker scored on an assist from Neve Duston in the Tigers’ District 13-4A loss in Stuart.

Grace Haner made seven saves for Martin County (8-4-2, 3-4 district).

Suncoast is 13-2-1, 6-1.

Martin County hosts Cardinal Newman at 6 p.m. Thursday.

Heritage 3, Sebastian River 0: Jahn’na Watts scored two goals and Victoria Vida had two assists as the Panthers won a District 6-4A game.

Heritage is 4-6-2. Sebastian River is 5-6.

Boys basketball

Sebastian River 56, Okeechobee 49: Corbin Gibson had 17 points and eight rebounds as the Sharks won a District 13-7A game at Sebastian.

Devare Parks had 12 points and seven rebounds for Sebastian River (7-9, 2-0 district).

Okeechobee (8-5, 0-1) lost its fourth consecutive game.

Sebastian River plays Friday at Jensen Beach.

Fort Pierce Central 41, P.K. Yonge 36: Darvion Blackshear had 15 points and five rebounds as the Cobras won in front of the Fort Pierce Central student body.

Vincent Ventulan added 11 points, eight assists and five rebounds for Fort Pierce Central (10-4). Dylan Torello had eight points and eight rebounds.

William Banks scored 13 points for P.K. Yonge (6-7).

Fort Pierce Central plays Friday at Centennial.

Girls basketball

Fort Pierce Central 55, P.K. Yonge (Gainesville) 45: Maryanne Logsdon had 16 points, eight rebounds and five assists as the Cobras won in Fort Pierce.

Denvia Morgan scored 11 points and Larissa Jennings had 10 for Fort Pierce Central (8-5).

Mya McGraw scored a game-high 18 points for P.K. Yonge (9-3).

Fort Pierce Central hosts Martin County at 6 p.m. Friday.

Jensen Beach 46, Martin County 40: Kiara Turgeon had a career-best 26 points, seven rebounds and four steals to lead the Falcons at Jensen Beach.

Jakiya Taylor added eight points and six rebounds for Jensen Beach (8-4). Hope Donow had six points, eight rebounds and three assists while Natalie Thurlow had six rebounds, four blocked shots and two assists.

Ja’shya Christie had five rebounds.

Martin County is 4-8.

Jensen Beach plays Jan. 17 against John Carroll Catholic.

Vero Beach 48, Treasure Coast 33: The Fighting Indians are 8-4, 3-2 in District 8-9A. Treasure Coast drops to 8-7, 0-5.

Jupiter 53, Fort Pierce Westwood 30: Aayden Ghee scored 15 points as the Warriors won in Fort Pierce.

Jupiter is 12-2. Fort Pierce Westwood is 5-8.

Okeechobee 75, South Fork 50 (Tuesday): Katelyn Aguirre scored 16 points and Rodasha Clemon had 13 in the Bulldogs’ District 13-7A loss.

Okeechobee (7-2, 3-1 district) outscored South Fork (1-11, 0-3) 46-25 in the second half.

South Fork plays Friday at Sebastian River.
