Fort Pierce Westwood boys soccer tries to extend historic season against Merritt Island

Regional quarterfinals: Fort Pierce Westwood defeated Hardee 3-1; Merritt Island defeated Lake Wales 5-1

Regional playoff history: Fort Pierce Westwood is 1-2 in three appearances; Merritt Island 

Worth noting: Merritt Island defeated Fort Pierce Westwood 5-2 in the regular season and 3-0 in the District 12-3A championship game … This is the first regional semifinal appearance in Westwood’s 34-year soccer history … Merritt Island has won four consecutive games … The Mustangs have outscored opponents 103-35 this season while Westwood has a 64-37 edge … Gabriel Guerrier has scored 33 goals this season for Westwood while Gassendy Etienne has 13 goals and 17 assists … Guerrier scored all three goals against Hardee after the Panthers had fallen behind 1-0 only three minutes into the game … Fort Pierce Westwood has trailed in all four playoff games this postseason … The Panthers set a school record for wins. The 1996-97 team won 13 games.

The winner plays: District 9-3A champion Tampa-Jesuit (26-1) or District 9-3A runner-up Tampa-Jefferson (11-7-2) at 7 p.m. Wednesday for the regional championship.
